Witches Black Salt

What is Witches Black Salt?

Black salt, also known as “Witches’ Salt,” is a blend of protective herbs, ashes, and salt used in white magic rituals for protective purposes. In this article, I will show you how to make Witches’ Black Salt.

This special salt not only protects, but it also counteracts spells and curses. Witches use it for energetic cleansings, to attract good luck, and to perform exorcisms.

It is important not to confuse it with Himalayan black salt, which is used in Ayurvedic medicine and intended for cooking. Witches’ Black Salt is not edible—it is crafted exclusively for magical practices.

How to make Witches Black Salt

Ingredients:

  • Protective herbs to burn or ashes from incense previously burned and saved for this purpose. (Witches usually don’t throw away incense ashes—we keep them for this and other magical uses. However, if this is your first time making it, you can burn herbs on the spot to collect the ashes). You may use Palo Santo, Sage, Thyme, Basil, Parsley, Rosemary, Bay Leaf, Rue, Lavender, Chamomile, Clover, Mugwort, or Fennel. (Any protective herb works).
  • Black pepper (whole or ground) – Optional: repels negative energies.
  • Star aniseOptional: cleanses and purifies spaces.
  • ClovesOptional: banishment and protection.
  • Coarse salt or sea salt.

When I say optional, I mean that ashes and salt alone are enough to create traditional Witches’ Black Salt. The additional ingredients simply enhance its power.

Process:

  • Grind all ingredients using a grinder or mortar and pestle. Personally, I prefer leaving the salt coarse and chunky, so the grains look dark and powerful. However, all other ingredients should be powdered. This is completely up to your taste.
  • Store the mixture in a jar.
  • Label it properly.

How to consecrate Witches Black Salt

Consecration is optional. Personally, I consider the salt ready to use as soon as it is mixed. However, if you wish to consecrate it, here is how:

Hold the bowl of black salt with both hands and draw a protective symbol in the air (such as a cross or a pentacle) over each of the four elements represented on your altar. As you do this, speak a consecration phrase like:
“By the power of the element Water, I consecrate you, Black Salt, so that you may protect me and banish evil from my surroundings.”

Repeat this for each of the four elements. Then, leave the jar to rest in a dark place for one full lunar cycle.

To represent the four elements:

  • Air: Athame, incense, bell
  • Water: Chalice, cauldron
  • Fire: Candles, wand
  • Earth: Salt, pentacle

Uses of Witches Black Salt

  • Purify and exorcise your amulets, crystals, and magical tools.
  • Use it to cast a protective circle.
  • Place a pinch in each corner of a room to ward off negative energies or entities.
  • Anoint a black candle with this salt and light it inside a protective circle to banish unwanted people or harmful situations.
  • Include it in jar spells or magical sachets as a charm for protection and good fortune.
  • Sprinkle some at your front door to prevent unwanted visitors.
  • Place a little in each corner of your workspace to absorb negativity.
  • Scatter it around your business to attract prosperity and good luck.

Important notes:

  • This salt is not for consumption under any circumstance.
  • I do not recommend using it in protective baths. For that purpose, use pure salt combined with fresh or dried herbs instead.
  • Do not confuse it with Himalayan black salt, which is used in cooking and Ayurvedic practices.
