Complete guide to magic with dolls
Menú de contenido
Poppets, also known as magical dolls, are traditional tools within practical witchcraft. They are handcrafted to represent a specific person, oneself, an archetype, or even a particular energy that one wishes to invoke, protect, or harmonize.
The term poppet comes from English, although in Spanish they are also known as muñecas quitapenas, ritual dolls, or magical figures. Contrary to popular belief, they are not voodoo dolls, nor are they exclusively associated with negative practices. Instead, their use depends entirely on the intention, ethics, and purpose of the person who creates them.
It is important to note that this guide does not explain how to dominate or control another person. Therefore, responsibility for any misuse of this information lies entirely with the reader.
What is a poppet and what is it used for?
A poppet is a symbolic representation that works under the principles of sympathetic or imitative magic—the idea that like affects like. By working with the doll, energy is channeled toward the person, situation, or intention it represents.
In practice, poppets can serve many purposes. For example, they may provide energetic protection, aid emotional or spiritual healing, attract abundance or prosperity, support self-esteem and confidence, or accompany you during periods of change. Furthermore, they can be used to manifest peace, calm, or clarity, and even activate creativity.
It is essential to understand that the poppet’s power does not come from the object itself. Rather, it emerges from the intention, the magical connection, and the consistent energetic work performed by the practitioner.
Materials and ways of creation
Traditionally, poppets are made from fabric, as it allows for greater personalization and symbolic charge. However, one can also craft them using other materials such as clay, wax, knitted fabric, felt, or crochet thread.
There is no single correct method; instead, the material should resonate with your practice and reflect your intention.
The heart of the poppet: intention and taglock
Inside the doll, different magical elements are carefully placed. For instance, dried herbs, crystals or energetic stones, symbols, sigils, runes, drawings, papers with written intentions, or various fillings such as cotton, stuffing, seeds, rice, or fabric scraps may be used.
Above all, the most important element is the taglock.
What is a taglock?
A taglock is a direct magical link between the poppet and the person or energy it represents. Typically, it can be any object that has a real connection to the target of the working. Examples include hair, nails, threads from clothing, personal belongings, a photograph, or a handwritten full name with date of birth.
In most cases, the taglock is placed in the head of the doll, as it symbolizes identity and conscious connection.
Preparation: clear intention and consecration
Before creating a poppet, it is crucial to have clarity about its purpose, how it will be used, what elements will be included inside, and the ethical framework that will guide the ritual.
Moreover, all materials should be cleansed and consecrated beforehand. This can be achieved through incense smoke, salt water, visualization, or personal prayer or invocation. Performing this step is essential for eliminating residual energies and preparing the materials for magical work.
Required materials
To begin crafting a poppet, you will need:
- Doll pattern (human or humanoid shape)
- Fabric and thread (preferably in a color aligned with your intention; white is universal)
- Needle
- Interfacing (optional)
- Filling (cotton, stuffing, seeds, rice, fabric scraps)
- Magical elements (herbs, crystals, symbols, runes, sigils, taglock)
- Scissors
- Marker or pen
- Optional decorations (buttons, ribbons, charms, sequins, threads)
- Yarn or thread for hair
- Written spell
Example of a spell
“I conjure you, (name of the poppet), to protect and guide me.
I command you to be my talisman now and always.
So it is, and so it shall be.”
This spell can be adapted according to your intention, always maintaining clear and conscious language.
Step-by-step creation of a poppet
- Cut out the doll shape twice (front and back), leaving extra margin.
- Draw symbols, runes, or sigils on the inside of the fabric.
- Decorate the front of the doll.
- Sew the edges, leaving an opening for stuffing.
- Make small cuts along the edges to ease turning.
- Turn the doll inside out.
- Place the taglock in the head.
- Fill arms and legs with stuffing only.
- At the neck level, add a crystal if desired.
- In the heart area, place the written spell.
- In the abdomen, add the herbs.
- Finish stuffing and close the seam.
- Add hair, decorations, and final details.
- Write or embroider its name on the sole of the foot or over the heart.

Activation of the poppet
To activate the poppet, gently blow air onto its face, call it by its name, and declare its purpose:
“Awaken, (name), my name is (your name).
I created you to fulfill your purpose.
You are complete and welcome.”
Afterward, place it in a special location, such as a nightstand, an altar, or under your pillow.
How to work with a poppet
Poppets require ongoing energetic attention. For instance, speak to them and offer small symbolic gestures. Additionally, keep them clean and in good condition, and avoid allowing others to handle them.
If someone does touch your poppet, perform an energetic cleansing using incense, salt water, or moonlight. It is important to note that needles or pins should never be inserted into a poppet. That practice belongs to harmful workings and is not part of an ethical or conscious path.
